Dumka: A blaze broke out at an allegedly illegal nail polish manufacturing unit located in a residential area near ‘sindoor’ factory in Deoghar around 5 am on Thursday, triggering a series of explosions and sending panic-stricken residents out of their homes. No casualties or injuries were reported, officials said.As flames engulfed the premises, drums containing spirit and other inflammable chemicals exploded one after another, sending thick smoke into the sky and debris flying across the neighbourhood. More than 15 drums containing spirit and other chemicals were stored inside the factory, eyewitnesses said.Fire officer Gopal Prasad Yadav, who led the operation, said, “Four fire tenders and 15 firefighters brought the fire under control after nearly three-and-a-half-hours. The team used aqua film forming foam (AFFF) besides water to extinguish the blaze.”Sub-inspector of the Town police station, Om Sharan, said, “Personnel assisted firefighters and maintained law and order during the operation. Preliminary findings suggest a short circuit may have triggered the blaze, though the exact cause is yet to be established.”Area residents alleged that the chemical-based manufacturing unit has been operating illegally in the densely populated residential area for the past six to seven years.“Further probe into the matter is under way. Appropriate action will be taken following that,” Deoghar SP Praveen Pushkar said.
