Handmade, hand-painted: What went into Anirudh & Kaviya's viral wedding invite

If the wedding invitations are anything to go by, Anirudh and Kaviya Maran seem to already be making a statement. Forget the sual card tucked into an envelope; heirs arrives in an ornate ivory ox, complete with intricate powder-blue floral carvings, gold accents and vintage-inspired medallion. The accompanying invitations follow the ame aesthetic: damask-inspired prints, embossed details and wax eals.Ranjani Iyengar, who designed he invitations, tells us that the dea was to create something “classic, elgant and timeless” that guests would want to hold on to. We wanted a distinct identity without making it overly laborate or personal,” she says and adds, “Kaviya was losely involved throughout the process; she and Anirudh worked together to refine the design.” Getting the box just right was a project in itself. “Each one was individual ly constructed by hand and hand- painted, with multiple printing tech- niques used to achieve its elaborate, three-dimensional finish. Even the hinges and the weight of the lids were carefully considered. The distressed finish wasn’t part of the plan. We experimented with tapping white paint onto the surface and liked how it looked, so that became part of the final design,” Ranjani says. The result? An invitation that is less something you glance at and put away. and more something you might want to keep on your coffee table long after the wedding. “The couple and their families loved the finished invitations, and the positive reactions have made the effort even more worthwhile,” she shares.Written By: Aashna Reddy
