Why India’s biggest news publishers are challenging its privacy law

The Times group, The Hindu, Indian Express, Network18, and NDTV are among publishers represented by DNPA, which has challenged India’s data protection law, arguing that the absence of safeguards for journalism could hinder investigations, expose sources and threaten news archives

A journalist investigating suspected corruption could have to seek permission from the person under scrutiny to use their personal information. A published report could face demands for deletion, even if it is accurate. And a government demand for newsroom records could reveal the identity of someone who spoke on condition of anonymity.
