Kerala University teachers’ body objects to biometric attendance punching

T’puram: The pro-CPM teachers’ organisation at University of Kerala (KU) has asked the institute to reconsider the syndicate’s decision to reintroduce the biometric attendance punching system. In a letter to the registrar, the organisation said fixing working hours on campus is unscientific for teachers who give equal importance to teaching and research. It said enforcing attendance punching on teachers who spend more than the stipulated hours on the university campus would harm research and demanded that the university’s unilateral decision be reconsidered. On the other hand, the pro-CPM organisation of non-teaching staff has taken a different position. It has said the system can be implemented subject to certain conditions and has demanded that the university hold discussions with employees. The attendance punching system was reintroduced on Nov 1. For two months, employees will continue to sign the attendance register in addition to punching. The university has taken a firm stand that it will not back down from the decision, pointing out that the punching system applies even to teachers who are doctors at the medical college.
