Textile industry raises long-pending issues with Giriraj

Surat: Industry representatives flagged mounting concerns over yarn prices and GST refunds during a meeting with Union textile minister Giriraj Singh on Friday, warning that the situation is putting severe pressure on Surat’s textile and allied segments.A key issue raised was the sharp escalation in yarn prices, which industry representatives said is forcing many units to consider an extended Diwali shutdown of over 15 days. They also reiterated a long-pending demand for resolving issues of GST return affecting the jari industry, a matter they said has remained unresolved for nearly two years.Rapier Jacquard Weavers Association of Surat (RJWAS) president Chetan Maniya highlighted the scale of the increase, stating that yarn prices have risen by up to 66% and are impacting the entire value chain. He urged the minister to intervene and initiate measures to protect the industry. Maniya’s question drew applause from participants, with several attendees voicing support.“Yarn prices have increased by 66%. Traders are increasing prices at every level. Overall charges for shipping are also adding to the rising prices. We request the ministry to monitor the price rise and control it,” Maniya said. He also called for steps to stop dumping of cheap yarn, which he said is disrupting the market.Secure Embro Thread & Jari Association (SEJTA) of Surat representative Jala Satiya sought resolution of the GST refund issue. “A notification can solve the issue of refunds,” Satiya said.“Around Rs 18 crore GST returns has not been paid to the metallic jari manufacturers on a monthly basis for the past three years. The issue has been raised at various levels but it is not being resolved,” said Tushar Kuvadiya, president, SEJTA.Singh assured the delegation that necessary action would be taken at the earliest.
