Mysuru: Vasan Eye Care Hospital, Mysuru, organised a ‘Safe Diwali eye awareness programme’ to educate children and parents about firecracker safety and the importance of protecting their eyes. The special initiative, running from Nov 5 to 12, targets children under 15. As part of the programme, doctors interacted with children, explained the risks associated with firecrackers and shared safety measures to prevent eye injuries caused by sparks, chemicals and accidental explosions. Referring to a study conducted by Minto Eye Hospital between 2008 and 2020, senior cataract surgeon Dr Hema Srinath said that of the nearly 650 eye injury cases reported, 320 involved children. Notably, 34% of the victims were bystanders. She advised parents to ensure adult supervision, maintain a safe distance while bursting crackers, wear protective goggles, and use appropriate clothing.
