South Goa road accidents rise 12%, fatalities drop 30%
The rise of 123 in the overall accident count remains a concern for traffic authorities

Panaji: South Goa recorded a 12% increase in road accidents between Jan and Oct this year, with 1,142 accidents reported against 1,019 during the corresponding period last year, according to Goa police traffic cell figures. However, fatalities declined by 30% during the 10-month period.Oct also saw a significant improvement in road safety, with the district reporting two fatal accidents compared to five in the same month last year.Despite the decline in fatal accidents, the rise of 123 in the overall accident count remains a concern for traffic authorities. Nearly 29% of the accidents were self-accidents, involving a single vehicle rather than a collision between two vehicles.Two-wheelers account for a considerable share of these incidents, with head injuries emerging as a major concern. While the reduction in fatalities offers some relief, the rising number of accidents highlights the need for sustained road safety awareness and responsible driving practices, particularly among two-wheeler riders.
