Pinarayi Vijayan should quit leader of opposition post: V Muraleedharan

Thiruvananthapuram: BJP national executive member and MLA V Muraleedharan on Thursday asked the state govt to clarify the financial allegations concerning the family of leader of opposition Pinarayi Vijayan and explain what action it has taken on the leads and evidence relating to four issues mentioned in a letter sent by Enforcement Directorate to the DGP.Speaking at the assembly media room, Muraleedharan also sought an explanation for the source of funds, reportedly running into crores of rupees, allegedly recorded in a diary for the future business plans of former minister Mohamed Riyas. The chief minister and home department must clarify their position, he said.Muraleedharan said Vijayan’s continuation as leader of opposition was an embarrassment to the opposition in Keralam and demanded that he step down.On the proposed resolution on ecologically sensitive areas, Muraleedharan said BJP would not oppose it but would suggest amendments. The party wanted the issue to be addressed by considering Keralam’s environmental conditions and people’s concerns. He said delays by the successive state govts and the late submission of documents to Centre had contributed to the delay in issuing the final notification. Blaming Centre alone, without examining the state govt’s lapses, including those in implementing National Green Tribunal orders, was factually incorrect, he said.On railway development, Muraleedharan rejected claims that transferring some stations in the Mangaluru region from the Palakkad division to the Mysuru division amounted to discrimination against Keralam. Railway divisions and zones were reorganised from time to time for administrative reasons, he said.He recalled that 78 stations were transferred from the Palakkad division when the Salem division was created in 2007 during the then UPA govt. Those who had remained silent then were now displaying political double standards, he alleged.Keralam’s average annual railway allocation, which was Rs 372 crore during the UPA period, had risen to Rs 3,795 crore in 2026-27, he said. Railway projects worth over Rs 20,000 crore are under way in the state, including multi-tracking and new-line projects, 145 overbridges and underpasses, and the redevelopment of 19 stations.
