Pargat condemns lathicharge and use of water cannons against teachers
Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh

Chandigarh: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Pargat Singh has condemned the use of force by the police against computer teachers who were holding a peaceful protest in Sangrur to demand their legitimate rights. He said that using water cannons against teachers seeking regularisation reflects the authoritarian and insensitive attitude of the Bhagwant Mann govt. The right to peacefully raise demands is a fundamental democratic right, but the Punjab govt is using police force to silence those voices, he alleged.Pargat said it was deeply disturbing that teacher Kuldeep Singh suffered three fractures in his leg during the police action, while a woman teacher sustained a serious eye injury. Teachers who dedicate their lives to shaping the future of society are being forced to take to the streets to fight for their own rights. The govt must explain why teachers demanding their legitimate rights are being subjected to such inhuman treatment, the Punjab Cong president said.He demanded that the govt immediately bear the entire medical expenses of the injured teachers and provide them with appropriate compensation. Strict action must also be taken against the police and administrative officials responsible for ordering and carrying out this excessive use of force, Pargat added. He said all legitimate demands of the teachers, including regularisation, must be resolved through dialogue.
