‘India may face situation worse than Bangladesh, Nepal’: Cong minister’s remark sparks row

Ranchi: A Congress minister’s warning that India could face a situation worse than Bangladesh and Nepal if the Centre failed to address growing public discontent triggered a political storm on Thursday, with the BJP accusing him of speaking the “language of anarchy” and demanding legal action.Congress minister and Jamtara MLA Irfan Ansari made the remarks while speaking to news agency PTI about recent youth-led agitations. He claimed discontent against the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre was mounting among youths, farmers and minorities, and warned that the situation could deteriorate if the Prime Minister failed to address public concerns.“From youths, farmers to minorities, everyone is troubled by the regime in the Centre and if the Prime Minister does not become alert, the country’s situation will turn worse than Bangladesh and Nepal. They are waiting for just one command. They will not go beyond what Rahul Gandhi says. Rahul Gandhi is holding these young people back,” Ansari said.Referring to ongoing protests, the minister claimed nearly 40 lakh students were agitating across the country, adding that Rahul Gandhi was holding them back from escalating their protests. The remarks drew sharp criticism from the BJP, which accused the Congress of encouraging disorder and questioned the intent behind the statement.Jharkhand BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo said, “Irfan Ansari is speaking the language of anarchy, saying 40 lakh students will take to the street to change the regime, and they are awaiting Rahul Gandhi’s signal. The Congress has cleared its intention. After repeated failure in the past three elections, the Congress wants to foster anarchy.”Stepping up the attack, Shahdeo alleged that the Congress was attempting to achieve through street agitation what it had failed to secure electorally.“It is unfortunate that the oldest party in the country is trying to change regime, fostering anarchy. We demand the Centre initiate legal action against him for his anti-national statements,” he said.
