Guwahati: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Congress of “rubbing salt” into the Sikh community’s wounds by holding a Delhi rally on the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The rally, led by Congress against alleged “vote theft” and electoral irregularities involving CEO Gyanesh Kumar, was held in Delhi as BJP workers, including state president Dilip Saikia, took out a “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy” march in Morigaon. In a post on ‘X’, Sarma wrote: “A request to Rahul Gandhi and all leaders of the INDIA bloc. On this very day in 1984, the Sikh community was massacred in Delhi and many parts of the country.”He claimed that “creating such a commotion (Congress rally) in Delhi on this day is no less than rubbing salt into the wounds of the country’s Sikh community.”“You could have held this rally on any other day, but perhaps being insensitive toward Sikhs is in your DNA. Well, since you’re all gathered in one place right now, at the very least, please apologise to the country’s Sikh community from the stage and observe two minutes of silence to pray for the peace of their souls,” he added.“In the fire of revenge for your grandmother’s (Indira Gandhi) assassination, more than 3,000 Sikhs were slaughtered under the leadership of your father and his colleagues,” he wrote. In another post, Sarma claimed that 12 of 15 Provincial Congress Committees backed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for Congress president in 1946, while none nominated Jawaharlal Nehru. “Today, Nehru’s great-grandson lectures the entire nation on ‘Vote Chori’. What an irony!” he added. The BJP claimed about 30,000 workers joined its march in Morigaon. Saikia said, “We will save democracy and protect the democratic institutions. Congress, left political parties, and those who cannot tolerate the development of the country want to create a disorderly situation in the country. People have come out today against their attempt.”
