9-year-old girl barred from exam over unpaid fees, offence registered against teacher, school principal

Nagpur: A nine-year-old Class IV student was allegedly prevented from appearing for her Hindi examination over unpaid fees at a school in Bokhara near Nagpur, resulting in registration of an offence against the principal, teacher and the school management for mental harassment. As per the complaint lodged by the parents of the girl student at Koradi police station, she was not issued a hall ticket and made to sit in the school library while her classmates appeared for the paper. A senior police officer said the girl is allegedly among 15 students who were meted out similar treatment.Police said the incident took place on Sept 28 this year when the school was conducting a Hindi examination between 9.30am and 12.30pm.The parents claimed that the discriminatory treatment embarrassed their daughter in front of her classmates, making her feel insulted and isolated. They alleged that the incident caused considerable mental trauma to the girl and adversely affected her emotional well-being.The girl’s father first approached Education Department, and also reported the matter to Women and Child Development Department. Both departments examined the matter and subsequently submitted their reports to Koradi police, which referred the matter to Child Welfare Committee and registered an offence on Nov 4.Zonal DCP Ramesh Dhumal said the principal and teachers concerned would be summoned for questioning. “The investigation will be looking into cases of all 15 students,” the DCP said.Police have invoked provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, relating to the prohibition of physical punishment and mental harassment, and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which deals with cruelty to children.
