Pune: Around 2.82 lakh enumerators and supervisors will visit households across Maharashtra from Jan 25 to Feb 28 next year to collect individual information during the second phase of Census 2027.Preparations for the exercise, called Population Enumeration, are underway. As many as 148 officials completed a state-level training programme at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (Yashada) in Pune on Thursday. Of them, a total of 120 were master trainers representing the state’s six revenue divisions. The remaining 28 were officials from the Directorate of Census Operations. They will train field trainers across Maharashtra. The field trainers will subsequently prepare and guide the 2.82 lakh enumerators and supervisors involved in household visits. The training, conducted in two sessions between Oct 28 and Nov 5, covered the Census procedures, 40 questions to be asked during population enumeration, use of a cellphone application, self-enumeration and enumeration block maps. Participants were also given practical exposure through demonstrations, role plays and field visits, officials said. The 40 questions will cover individual demographic and socio-economic details, including education, occupation, migration and fertility. Caste enumeration will also be part of the exercise.Nirupama J Dange, joint secretary to Union govt and chief principal Census officer, Maharashtra, said the first phase, involving House Listing and Housing Census, had been completed successfully across the state from May 16 to June 14. “Now, the second phase, Population Enumeration, which involves the actual collection of information about citizens, is about to commence. The responsibility of master trainers is not limited merely to imparting classroom training. They must remain associated with the entire process, supporting field operations right up to the final day of the revisional round,” she said. Before the door-to-door exercise, citizens will get a 15-day self-enumeration window from Jan 10 to 24, 2027, to submit details about themselves and their families online. This will be followed by household visits by enumerators and supervisors. A revisional round from March 1 to 5 will allow officials to verify and update the collected information. The reference date for Population Enumeration will be midnight of March 1, 2027.
