RAJKOT: A young man’s house was allegedly attacked and a hay shed outside it set on fire after he eloped with a woman in Gujarat’s Rajkot district, police said on Tuesday. Eight people have been arrested in connection with the incident.The incident took place on Monday night in Vinchhiya taluka.According to police, Nikita, daughter of Hakabhai Jogarajiya, allegedly eloped with Vijay, the brother-in-law of complainant Ramila Sheikh on October 31.Following this, Jogarajiya and seven others allegedly entered Sheikh’s house and demanded that the family hand over Nikita. When Sheikh and her mother-in-law refused, the accused allegedly threatened them with dire consequences.The group then allegedly set fire to a shed made of hay and wooden materials outside the house and damaged its roof tiles, according to the FIR. Fearing for their safety, the two women fled to a nearby agricultural field.Relatives and neighbours later helped extinguish the fire. The complainant estimated the property damage at around Rs 25,000, the FIR stated.Police registered a case under Sections 326(g), 333, 191(2), 324(4), 189(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), covering offences including mischief, house-trespass, rioting, unlawful assembly and intentional insult.
