Supermarkets are shared spaces where hundreds of people shop, touch products and move through narrow aisles every day. While most shoppers follow basic shopping etiquette, some everyday actions can create inconvenience for others or even affect food safety. Here are five things you should avoid doing during your next supermarket visit.
1. Leave refrigerated or frozen products on random shelves
Picking up ice cream, frozen food or chilled dairy products and leaving them in a regular aisle is not a good idea. These products are meant to remain at specific temperatures, and leaving them outside refrigeration can affect their quality and safety. If you change your mind, hand the item to a staff member instead of abandoning it.
2. Open food packets before paying
Opening a packet of chips, biscuits or any other product before paying for it is poor shopping etiquette. Even if you intend to purchase it, the product is still unpaid merchandise. It can also create confusion for supermarket staff and other shoppers.
3. Block aisles with shopping carts
Stopping in the middle of a narrow aisle to compare products or check your shopping list can make it difficult for others to pass. Leaving a trolley unattended across an aisle can be equally inconvenient. Keep your cart close to one side and allow enough room for other shoppers.
4. Touch fresh produce and put it back carelessly
Checking fruits and vegetables before buying them is normal, but repeatedly squeezing, handling or damaging produce is unnecessary. It can affect the quality of the food and make it less appealing to other customers. Use the available bags and choose produce gently.
5. Ignore the checkout queue rules
Moving ahead of people who have been waiting or occupying another checkout lane without checking the queue can create unnecessary arguments. If you have only a few items, look for an express checkout instead of assuming you can skip ahead. Being considerate makes the shopping experience easier for everyone.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
