Panaji: Water resources minister Subhash Shirodkar on Tuesday said that if MGP president Pandurang ‘Deepak’ Dhavalikar contests the 2027 assembly elections against him from the Shiroda constituency, Dhavalikar is headed for a second defeat at his hands.“Let him come. He experienced defeat in the 2019 byelections. Now, he will witness double defeat. It will make no difference to me (if he contests from Shiroda). I am so well set with my people and my workers that victory is 100%,” Shirodkar said.Dhavalikar’s statement follows the MGP general body meeting held last Saturday, after which he confirmed that he will contest the 2027 elections from Shiroda. With MGP currently an alliance partner of BJP govt in the state, Shiroda is expected to become one of the contentious constituencies during seat-sharing negotiations between the two parties.

In the 2019 Shiroda bypoll, Shirodkar, contesting as BJP’s candidate, won the seat by defeating Dhavalikar by a narrow margin of 66 votes. In the 2022 assembly elections, Dhavalikar contested from Priol and lost again — this time to BJP candidate Govind Gaude. In 2022, MGP did not have a pre-poll alliance with BJP and instead tied up with TMC.
