Kolkata: Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee has written to the higher education department seeking permission to hold an executive council meeting to decide on the university’s convocation, including the chief guest and conferring the honoris causa. JU holds its annual convocation on Dec 24. This is the second time Bhattacharjee has written to the department for approval. He also wrote to the governor-chancellor R N Ravi a few days ago.“I stated that the convocation has to be held, and it is fixed for December 24. Immediate action needs to be taken on certain matters, like who the chief guest will be and whether honorary degrees will be awarded. For that, clear signals are needed from both the state government and the chancellor. The most important thing is that I need to call an EC meeting and a court meeting. The convocation is essentially an extended court meeting,” said Bhattacharjee. This is the second letter that Bhattacharjee wrote to the department seeking a nod to hold EC meetings and finalise convocation-related matters. JU has got all govt nominees and chancellor nominees on the EC. “CU has recently conducted their syndicate meeting. We do not know why permission is not being granted for JU EC. Convocation is an important event for the students and the university,” said a teacher.
