Vadodara: A 37-year-old death-row convict sentenced earlier this year for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Bharuch district died of a heart attack in Vadodara Central Jail on Friday, jail officials said. His family sought an inquiry into the circumstances of his death.Vijay Paswan was lodged in Vadodara Central Jail after a sessions court in Bharuch sentenced him to death earlier this year.Jail officials said Paswan suffered a heart attack early on Friday morning in his barrack. He was rushed to the jail hospital, where he died shortly afterwards.Paswan was arrested for kidnapping, raping and murdering a 10-year-old girl, the daughter of migrant labourers, in Jhagadia GIDC in Bharuch district in Dec last year.Bharuch police tracked him down and arrested him within a day of the crime.He was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and other relevant laws. After finding him guilty, the sessions court awarded him the death penalty earlier this year.Paswan was shifted to Vadodara Central Jail in May 2026 following the verdict.Sources in the jail said Paswan largely kept to himself and rarely interacted with other inmates.“Paswan was a loner. As such, most jail inmates don’t respect or fraternize with men accused of rape,” a jail official said.
