Hubballi: In a department often associated with long hours, high stress and strict discipline, a simple birthday greeting is making a difference. The Hubballi-Dharwad police commissionerate has launched a unique initiative under which constables and inspectors receive birthday wishes from senior officers, helping create a stronger sense of belonging within the force. The initiative, rolled out from Nov 1, involves personalised greeting cards from the commissioner’s office carrying a message that mental commitment is as important as physical fitness in police service.Police commissioner Bhushan Borasetold TOI that the programme was introduced to enhance the feel-good factor among personnel. “We have data on the birthdates of all staff members. Greeting cards will be prepared every month and sent to police stations for distribution. We also plan to personally call personnel on their birthdays whenever possible,” he said. With over 2,100 constables in the commissionerate, reaching everyone individually is difficult, Borase said, adding that even a small gesture can make personnel feel valued and cared for by the department. The initiative has received a positive response from the ranks. Sangamesh Didiginal, an inspector at Gokul Road police station, said staff members were pleased to receive greetings from the commissioner’s office.Somu Reddy, a head constable and playwright, said the personalised cards reflect a rare human touch in a system where interactions with senior officers are often linked to discipline and accountability. “Such encouragement motivates us to work with greater enthusiasm and dedication,” he said.Psychiatrist Dr Shivanand Hiremath noted that police personnel work under constant pressure and public scrutiny. “Even a small gesture of appreciation can significantly boost morale and motivate staff to engage with the public more positively,” he said. The initiative, officers say, is aimed at strengthening motivation and workplace well-being within the force.
