CHENNAI: Police and animal welfare activists rescued 25 cattle being transported to Keralam for slaughter in cramped conditions and without proper documents near Maraimalai Nagar on Saturday. The animals have been moved to a govt-run shelter, while police are awaiting a veterinarian’s certificate before taking further action. The rescue followed a complaint by animal welfare activist Sai Vignesh, who spotted the truck parked near Maraimalai Nagar on Saturday evening.“Cow dung and urine were leaking from the vehicle and I could see that the animals were cramped inside. There was no provision for food or drinking water, no adequate ventilation, and the animals were struggling to breathe, contrary to govt rules for slaughter transport. I informed the police, and filed a complaint,” he said.A senior police officer confirmed that the drivers did not have a ‘fit-to-transfer’ certificate issued by the Animal Husbandry Department.“The drivers admitted that the cattle were being transported for slaughter. The truck was then raided by a police team, and all 25 cattle were sent to a govt goshala for immediate care. A certificate from a veterinarian, after examining the animals, the wound and their age, is required for further action, against the driver and the employer,” the officer said.
