Tsunamis, storm surges and rising sea levels: Mumbai University, INCOIS plan research centre to strengthen Maharashtra’s coastal safety

MUMBAI: Strengthening early warning systems and disaster preparedness along Maharashtra’s 720km coastline will be the focus of a joint research centre planned by the University of Mumbai and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad. The centre will work towards developing scientific solutions to improve preparedness for natural hazards such as tsunamis, storm surges, high waves and fluctuations in sea levels.University of Mumbai vice-chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni said the collaboration would particularly benefit coastal communities in Mumbai, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Vengurla by strengthening their ability to respond to climate change and natural disasters. The partnership aims to reduce disaster risks, improve response mechanisms and develop effective measures to address emerging environmental challenges. The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Friday to strengthen marine research, promote ocean-based technologies and enhance coastal resilience. The collaboration will also focus on developing advanced ocean science services and undertaking joint research and development projects to support marine industries and the sustainable use of ocean resources. The initiative is expected to create new opportunities in marine science and technology in Maharashtra by combining the university’s academic and research capabilities with INCOIS’s expertise in ocean information services. It will also contribute to coastal protection, sustainable marine resource management and India’s Blue Economy.
