EVs attract city buyers as SUVs drive rural demand this festive season

Lucknow: Electric vehicles (EVs) are attracting growing interest from urban buyers keen to cut fuel expenses, even as SUVs remain the preferred choice in rural areas where demand is driven by utility and aspiration.Automobile dealers said enquiries for EVs have increased this festive season, particularly among city residents with access to home charging facilities. However, the rise in interest has not translated into a proportionate increase in bookings, with buyers delaying purchases while comparing prices, loan options and festive discounts.“Overall car enquiries and bookings are lower than last year. However, interest in electric cars has improved among urban customers. Buyers with fixed daily travel routes and charging facilities at home are showing interest. We expect some improvement closer to Diwali,” said Akash Singh, a sales executive at a dealership.Dealers said prospective EV buyers are seeking detailed information on battery range, charging time and maintenance costs, though the higher upfront price remains a hurdle.“I use my car mainly within the city. With fuel expenses increasing, I have started considering an electric car. The initial investment is higher, but the savings on running costs make it worth evaluating,” said Gomti Nagar resident Ramesh Srivastava.According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), EV retail sales rose 26.78% to 1.17 lakh units during the 10-day Navratri period in 2026 compared to the corresponding period last year. Passenger vehicle retail sales, however, declined 21.91% during the same period. While city buyers weigh the economics of switching to electric mobility, SUVs continue to dominate wish lists in rural Uttar Pradesh. “An SUV suits village roads better and offers enough space for the entire family,” said Rajesh Yadav, a farmer from Barabanki planning to buy a new vehicle. For many rural buyers, the attraction extends beyond practicality.“Earlier, people aspired to own a motorcycle. Today, an SUV is a matter of pride. It reflects how far a family has progressed,” said Sandeep Maurya, a businessman from Hardoi.Dealers are banking on festive discounts, exchange bonuses and attractive finance schemes to revive bookings in the run-up to Diwali, followed by a further boost from wedding-season purchases.
