Mizoram BJP to hold rally today against protests over electoral-roll revision
BJP general secretary Delson Notlia

Aizawl: BJP’s Mizoram unit will organise a rally in Aizawl on Wednesday under the theme “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy — Citizens for Democracy”, state BJP general secretary Delson Notlia said on Tuesday. The rally is being organised to “save democracy”, protect the electoral system and safeguard democratic institutions established under the Constitution, Notlia said at a news conference in Aizawl. He accused the Congress and other opposition parties of attempting to undermine democratic institutions through protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.“SIRs have been undertaken 12 times since 1952, including 10 during Congress rule,” he said. The main objective of the SIR exercise is to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls and to systematise the electoral process, Notlia said. The exercise also seeks to remove duplicate entries, the names of deceased persons and those who have migrated, as well as the names of ineligible voters, and to correct errors in voter records, he said.Defending the deletion of 13 crore names from electoral rolls during the SIR, Notlia said 6.3 crore names, or 48.1%, were deleted because voters had shifted or migrated; three crore, or 22.9%, because they were not present during the survey; 2.8 crore, or 21.4%, because the voters were deceased; and one crore, or 7.6%, because of duplicate entries. He said there were around 45 crore internal migrants in the country and that 10 crore to 12 crore people had died between 2002 and 2024.Notlia also alleged that some elements, allegedly instigated by foreign powers and funded by foreign sources, were seeking to destabilise Indian democracy by opposing democratic institutions and creating anarchy.India is a democratic country and the people’s mandate should be respected, he said. Differences of political opinion should be resolved through democratic and constitutional means, he added.“Violence in any form, intimidation, dissemination of misinformation and foreign interference should never be used as tools to change a government that has received the people’s mandate. The right to protest should not be used as a licence to bring anarchy,” he said.
