Pune: The Airport police have registered a case against a passenger for allegedly trying to open the emergency exit door of an IndiGo aircraft flying from Delhi to Pune at 12.30 am on Monday. An IndiGo employee, Omkar Vinod Kulkarni (28), lodged a police complaint. A case has been registered under Section 125 (endangering human life or the personal safety of others) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Aircraft Act.Deputy commissioner of police (VII) Abhinash Kumar told TOI the passenger did not intend to open the door. “He was fiddling with the cover when he accidentally pulled on the lever. The crew managed to stop him on time,” Kumar said.Kumar said the suspect, who works in the software industry, lives in Saswad and had visited Delhi. The incident occurred during his return flight, the police said.It is illegal to tamper with the emergency exit door unless there’s an actual emergency. In the complaint, the airline’s staffer said the suspect’s actions endangered other passengers.“This is the second such incident in which a passenger tried to open the emergency door without permission. A similar incident had occurred in 2024,” he said.An official statement from IndiGo is awaited at the time of going to print, but sources with the airline said the passenger was seated in 19D. “We understand the man was trying to open the window shade, but accidentally reached for the emergency door lever. It would have opened the door and deployed the emergency slide. The crew saw this on time and told him to stop,” the source said. Despite the apparent lack of intent, the flight crew treated him as an unruly passenger and handed him over to the police.
