Kalyan man surrenders before police 20 days after murdering friend, says victim kept appearing in his dreams
Man turned himself in to the Thane Crime Branch after struggling to sleep following the brutal murder of his friend

KALYAN: Nearly three weeks after a man was allegedly murdered in Dombivli West, the accused walked into a police station on Monday and surrendered, reportedly telling investigators that repeated dreams about his dead friend had left him unable to sleep.Police subsequently recovered the victim’s body from a spot near a creek and arrested another man suspected of helping to dispose of it.The deceased, Vishal Kadam, 42, was allegedly killed by his close friend, Prabhu Karkade, 24, following a dispute during a drinking session at a house in the Mothagaon area. Karkade’s landlord, Sandesh Mhatre, 42, has also been arrested for his alleged role in disposing of the body.According to police, the incident occurred around 20 days ago when Karkade and Kadam were drinking at Mhatre’s house. A quarrel broke out between the two friends and allegedly escalated into a violent assault. Kadam died at the spot after Karkade allegedly beat him severely.Following the incident, Karkade allegedly approached Mhatre for help. Police suspect that the duo stuffed Kadam’s body into a sack and dumped it at an isolated spot near Mothagaon creek on Kopar Road in an attempt to conceal the crime. The breakthrough came on Monday morning when Karkade surrendered at the Thane Crime Branch office. The Crime Branch subsequently informed Vishnunagar police station, which has jurisdiction over the area. During questioning, Karkade allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed where the body had been dumped. Police teams then reached the spot and recovered the body. Mhatre was later arrested from his residence in Dombivli West.Vijay Marathe, assistant commissioner of police, said the accused had reportedly been experiencing sleepless nights since the killing.“The accused said he could not sleep because his friend kept appearing in his dreams. He therefore surrendered at police station. Our teams recovered the body from the spot indicated by him and arrested the landlord who allegedly assisted in disposing of it,” Marathe said.Police are now trying to establish what triggered the argument and whether Mhatre had any role beyond allegedly helping to dispose of the body. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the killing and the subsequent attempt to conceal the crime. Both accused were produced before a Kalyan court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody for four days. The investigation is underway.
