Keralam to tighten curbs on fake lottery sales online

Thiruvananthapuram: The state govt is taking steps to enforce laws against the manufacture and sale of fake lottery tickets using AI and social media, said CM V D Satheesan on Wednesday. Replying to a submission by Sumesh Achuthan on the illegal sale of Kerala lotteries, Satheesan said govt was concerned about the financial loss to the state exchequer and the hardships caused to the public and lottery workers due to fraudulent practices. These include selling counterfeit tickets using AI and selling the same ticket illegally to multiple buyers on social media.Under Kerala Paper Lotteries (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2024, Kerala lottery tickets can be sold only in their original printed form through authorised agents. Rule 6(2) prohibits the sale of lottery tickets, their numbers or images through communication devices, computers or social media platforms. Violations attract punishment under Section 7(3) of Lotteries (Regulation) Act, 1998, which provides for rigorous imprisonment of up to two years, a fine or both for those involved in the sale, distribution or promotion of lotteries in violation of the Act.He said the lottery department had received complaints about illegal online sales and the misuse of Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and Telegram to circulate lottery-related information and collect money from the public. Most complaints came from outside the state, he said.
