Health inspector arrested in Kovalam spa sexual exploitation case

Thiruvananthapuram: Kovalam Police have arrested a temporary health inspector at Nagaroor, Maya V (42), from the city for allegedly sexually exploiting a minor girl at a couple of spas.Police said the spa’s income was initially routed to her bank account, mostly through Google Pay. The amount was subsequently transferred to the account of Anuroop, another health inspector with the Thiruvananthapuram corporation, who was arrested earlier in the case and suspended from service. Her alleged involvement came to light during the interrogation of Anuroop and an examination of his mobile phone and bank account details, police said. They are questioning Maya and are expected to produce her before a court on Thursday.Meanwhile, the special team probing the case is expected to return to the state from Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. The team, led by SI Vinod Vikramaditya, went to gather details about the victim’s childhood, family background and educational history. Investigators are examining her school records and looking into reports that two Aadhaar cards were linked to her name, as part of efforts to verify her background and establish the circumstances leading to the alleged offences. The SIT is also expected to seek the custody of Anuroop, the victim’s maternal aunt and her husband for further questioning. The Neyyattinkara court is likely to consider the custody applications on Thursday.Earlier, a forensic team inspected a homestay on Kovalam’s Beach Road, allegedly owned by the third accused, Sajith Kumar (47). The victim had reportedly stayed at the property with her maternal aunt, who is also an accused in the case, and the latter’s husband. Police said the examination yielded further evidence but declined to disclose details. One police team is also planning to send a team to Chennai following information that one of the accused spa owners operated an establishment there and that the girl may have been sexually assaulted at the spa. The SIT is examining possible interstate links as part of the wider investigation. Those previously in judicial remand include spa owners Kumar and Nishanth (46), the victim’s maternal aunt and her husband, and Anuroop, a health inspector at the corporation’s Ulloor zonal office and a native of Kancham Pazhinji in Poovar.
