Chicken in veg biryani? Bengaluru airport eatery sparks outrage after family's shocking discovery

Getting your food order messed up is annoying at the best of times. But when you’re traveling with your family, follow a strict vegetarian diet for religious reasons, and bite into a piece of meat on what was supposed to be a veg plate? That moves past minor inconvenience straight into a complete mess. That’s exactly what a family from Varanasi says happened to them while waiting for a flight at Bengaluru airport’s Terminal 1.Piyush Agrawal, a member of the family, took to X to document what went down at an eatery named Taste of India near gates 16 and 17. The group had ordered vegetarian biryani to share before boarding. But after sitting down and eating a few bites, they realized something was very wrong – there were small pieces of chicken mixed right into the rice.

The confrontation at the counter

In clips uploaded to social media, a woman from the group holds up a plate showing small bits of meat leftover among the grains of rice.“Look, we ordered veg biryani, and found tiny pieces of chicken in this,” Agrawal says while recording the dish.Things escalated pretty quickly after that. Airport security and floor staff stepped in, urging the restaurant to bring out the manager and the kitchen staff to explain how non-veg got served to a vegetarian customer. According to Agrawal, the worst part was that the kids in their group had already eaten a few spoonfuls before anyone noticed what was actually on the plate. He noted that the manager and chef eventually admitted the dish contained chicken, leaving the family furious over what they felt was a direct hit to their religious beliefs.

Demands for an official probe

Agrawal didn’t just leave it as an argument at the counter. Holding onto their receipt and the food as evidence, the family called on the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) alongside Bengaluru airport management to investigate the outlet. They asked officials to pull CCTV footage, check kitchen prep logs, and enforce strict penalties if the restaurant cross-contaminated or mislabeled the orders.

The internet weighs in

Once the video started circulating online, it didn’t take long for the comments to split into a debate.A few people questioned why a strictly vegetarian family would risk eating at a joint that handles meat in the first place, suggesting cross-contamination is always a risk at mixed outlets. But most commenters pushed back hard against that logic. The general consensus was simple: if a food counter lists a vegetarian option on its menu and takes your money for it, keeping meat out of that dish is the bare minimum requirement. Customers shouldn’t have to play detective with their dinner just because an outlet serves both options. For the family involved, it wasn’t just about a kitchen mix-up or bad service. They trusted a high-profile airport vendor to serve them what they ordered, only to have their trip ruined before even stepping onto the plane.
