Kolkata: A blanket ban on laser lights, drones and sky lanterns continues to be imposed across Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate amid concerns that these displays could pose a serious threat to aircraft landing at or taking off from the airport. The restriction is particularly significant this year as Kolkata Police has allowed the release of sky lanterns during the festive period, provided those doing so possess valid licences. The relaxation, however, does not extend to areas under Bidhannagar commissionerate because of their proximity to the airport.DGCA guidelines mandate an 18.5-km-radius exclusion zone for laser lights around airports. “We have asked all puja organisers to refrain from using laser lights and drones and sky lanterns,” a senior police officer said.Sky lanterns, made of thin paper and fitted with a wire frame and a burning fuel cell, can soar up to 3,000 feet. Their seemingly harmless ascent, officials warn, can pose a serious threat to aircraft. The ban on their release remains particularly stringent within 10 km of the airport, a measure introduced in 2018 after air traffic controllers reported multiple near-miss incidents.“Should a lantern get sucked into an aircraft engine, its iron wire can severely damage the core. During descent, an aircraft travels at around 300 kmph, and even a small object entering the engine intake can have catastrophic consequences,” an airline official said.Meanwhile, Bidhannagar Police has intensified raids and awareness drives in Birati, Narayanpur, Rajarhat, New Town, Baguiati, Lake Town and Salt Lake, with special monitoring around Eco Park and the airport. Barrackpore commissionerate has also stepped up awareness campaigns and surveillance.
