Ahmedabad: AMC approves Rs 19 crore storm water pumping station in Ghuma

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s water and sewage committee on Thursday approved a Rs 18.95 crore proposal for the construction of a storm water pumping station near Ratna Lake in Ghuma. The project also includes two years of operation and maintenance. The decision comes in the wake of severe waterlogging in Bopal and Ghuma during the July 2026 rains, when civic authorities took nearly a week to drain floodwaters from several affected areas. On July 23, parts of Ahmedabad received intense rainfall, with more than six inches recorded within 10 hours between 8am and 6pm. Western areas including Bopal, Bodakdev, Bakrol and Sarkhej received around 10 to 11 inches of rain. The downpour led to waterlogging at over 300 locations across the city and inundated more than 100 residential societies in the western region. The heavy rainfall also uprooted over 50 trees and forced the closure of 10 underpasses, including those at Shahibaug, Makarba, Akhbarnagar, Mithakhali, Usmanpura and Parimal.Following three consecutive days of rain in July, Bopal and Ghuma emerged as the worst-hit areas, with more than 30 residential societies remaining flooded. The newly approved pumping station is expected to improve storm water drainage and reduce the risk of prolonged waterlogging in the area during future monsoons.
