After Arnab rain, Met tracks another bay system
Rain in Kolkata on Thursday

Kolkata: After very severe cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’ weakened into a low-pressure area with continued impact on Kolkata and other parts of the state on Thursday, the Met office is tracking another weather system over the Andaman Sea, adjoining Andaman and Nicobar Islands. As part of the trailing effect of ‘Arnab’, the city received brief spells of light rain on Thursday. The city is likely to be free of its impact by the second half of Friday with the city receiving a few spells of light rain. Though the impact on south Bengal will be reduced, north Bengal may get heavy rain, said HR Biswas, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata. The new weather system could get condensed into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours and thus influence the state’s weather system next week. However, IMD is yet to forecast whether the depression would further intensify into another cyclonic storm. According to a special IMD bulletin, the system persisted over the same region on Thursday, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6-km above the mean sea level. “This system has 80% chance of intensifying into a depression,” Biswas added. He added that the possibility of further intensification of the depression into a cyclonic storm will depend on meteorological conditions.Sea surface temperature and the speed of the system over the sea could prevent it from gaining the strength of a cyclonic storm, said weathermen. The intensity of the influence on the Bengal’s weather system would depend on the low-pressure’s path and speed, added Biswas. The maximum temperature dropped 2.7°Celsius below normal to 28.2° Celsius. Cyclone Arnab has now weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining northwest Odisha.
