3 cops suspended after Rs 3cr jewellery heist in Rohtas; traders boycott official meetings

Sasaram: Two days after armed robbers looted jewellery worth over Rs 3 crore from a showroom near Mahatma Gandhi Chowk in Kochas in broad daylight, Rohtas SP Raj on Wednesday night suspended three police personnel for alleged dereliction of duty. Meanwhile, traders in Kochas announced a boycott of all administrative meetings until the culprits are arrested. An SIT has been constituted to crack the case, while police have also held meetings with jewellery shop owners across Rohtas district to discuss preventive measures against such crimes.According to police sources, the suspended personnel, SI Budhan Singh Champia, constable Sonu Kumar and woman constable Sangeeta Kumari, were deployed for daytime patrolling on Tuesday. A patrol vehicle was stationed near Mahatma Gandhi Chowk, about 100 metres from Kanchan Jewellers, when four armed men allegedly looted jewellery worth around Rs 3 crore from the showroom on Tuesday and escaped. The incident triggered strong resentment among traders in Kochas, who, at an emergency meeting on Wednesday night, resolved to stay away from all meetings convened by the administration, including peace committee meetings, until police make a breakthrough in the case.Traders said this was the second major robbery at Kanchan Jewellers in 14 months. On Aug 25, 2025, jewellery worth Rs 5.20 crore was looted from the same showroom. They demanded the immediate arrest of the accused, enhanced security measures and regular night patrolling in commercial areas.More than 24 hours after the robbery, police were yet to make a major breakthrough. However, Sadar SDPO-2 Sanjeev Kumar said police teams were working continuously on the case. “We are continuously working on the case and hope to arrest the accused soon,” he said.Traders clarified that the boycott was not directed against any particular officer but was aimed at pressing for stronger security arrangements and better protection of life and property.
