Chitradurga: More than 400 arecanut saplings were allegedly chopped down by unidentified miscreants at a farm in JJ Colony, under Chowluru gram panchayat limits in Challakere taluk, on Tuesday night. Farmer Swamy said he had not visited the farm because the village was observing the Maramma festival. Taking advantage of his absence, the miscreants allegedly entered the farm and indiscriminately cut down the plants. “I had planted the saplings in rows over the past three years. Despite the drought and financial difficulties, I had raised them by borrowing money and cared for them like my children. The miscreants have destroyed the entire farm,” he said. The incident has caused concern among farmers struggling to protect crops amid drought-like conditions. Akhanda Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene urged police to investigate, identify those responsible and initiate legal action.
