Chitradurga: Congress will launch a statewide campaign to protect voting rights after its Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao rally in New Delhi on Nov 1, KPCC general secretary and Karnataka campaign in-charge Deepti Mary Varghese said.Addressing a consultative meeting at the district Congress office on Sunday, Varghese said the campaign would be taken to district, taluk, ward and gram panchayat levels. It would raise awareness about the alleged deletion of genuine voters’ names from electoral rolls through the special intensive revision.Varghese alleged that crores of voters in West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra had been removed from electoral rolls, depriving them of their constitutional right to vote. She urged party workers, leaders and frontal organisation office-bearers to mobilise public support against the alleged deletions.Accusing BJP of attempting to undermine voting rights, she said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was among the first to raise the issue. She warned that denying eligible voters an opportunity to vote in upcoming local body elections would weaken democracy.MLA KC Veerendra and district Congress president MK Tajpeer attended the meeting.
