Kolkata: An undertrial prisoner, Basudeb Naskar (44), died under allegedly unusual circumstances at Baruipur Subdivisional Hospital on Tuesday, 14 days after another undertrial, Azharul Laskar, was found dead in the bathroom of the same hospital on Oct 13.His wife, Sonali, alleged her husband was murdered and demanded an investigation. The two deaths in a fortnight raised questions over the safety of inmates and the monitoring arrangements at the hospital.Naskar, a resident of Betberia in Baruipur, was arrested earlier this month for allegedly practising as a fake doctor and issuing forged death certificates in exchange for money. He had been in judicial custody following a court order. Sonali reportedly received a call from the police on Monday, informing her that her husband was unwell. When she went to the jail, she was told Naskar was admitted to Baruipur Sub-divisional Hospital. At the hospital, she allegedly found her husband lying on a bed with his hands and legs tied. When she visited the hospital again around 10.30 am on Tuesday, she was told her husband was dead.Sonali alleged that neither the information about her husband’s hospitalisation nor the circumstances surrounding his death had been properly communicated to the family. Police have sent the body for post-mortem.
