Vytilla Junction improvement works in final stage; plan to divert vehicles through Hub
Traffic moves smoothly following the opening of a new median cut beneath the Vyttila Flyover in Kochi

Kochi: Major traffic infrastructure upgrades at Vyttila Junction, as part of a Rs 1.50-crore project funded by Kerala Road Safety Authority, have entered the final phase.“Assistant commissioner of police (traffic) and senior civil officials confirmed that a comprehensive traffic re-routing plan will take effect immediately upon completion of the physical infrastructure work,” Thrikkakkara MLA Uma Thomas said. The pending activities include shifting a water pipeline, an electric post and the police aid post. The respective agencies, Kerala Water Authority and Kerala State Electricity Board, are asked to carry out the same urgently.“The plan is to divert heavy vehicles, especially the private buses proceeding to Trippunithura and Aroor through the mobility hub service road,” she added. As part of implementing a new signal-free traffic flow, a meeting with Vyttila Mobility Hub Society and other departments, including the police and motor vehicles department, will be convened soon.Though the junction improvement activities were finalised on May 6, 2025, it was delayed for various reasons and finally began two months ago. The key measures include setting up free left turns, shrinking the 16m roundabout below the flyover to widen the carriageway, chipping off median edges to allow direct bus entry from Kundanoor side into the mobility hub, shifting the police aid post, and extending the zebra crossing lines at the western end.Meanwhile, Vyttila councillor V P Chandran demanded that a new road be constructed from Vyttila Metro station to Kunnara Park. “If they are planning to divert the traffic through the hub, then a new road is vital; otherwise, it will result in heavy congestion at the current hub exit (near Vyttila temple). KMRL already owns the land till Kunnara Park, and the road can be constructed beneath the Metro pillars. There is no need for further land acquisition,” he said. The development comes even as the state govt has given in-principle approval for the local area plan at Vyttila. The proposals include the redevelopment of the Vyttila hub, a bus station on the northern side near the flyover, setting up an urban canopy beneath the flyover, and a waterfront urban park near Kaniyampuzha.
