T’puram: The state human rights commission (SHRC) has directed Hantex managing director to construct a protective wall around a dangerous well on the organisation’s property in Balaramapuram to prevent accidents.SHRC chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas said Hantex could not evade its responsibility citing financial difficulties. If the organisation failed to take action, the complainant could approach the competent court, the panel said in its order.SHRC issued the directive on a complaint filed by a woman from AKG Nagar in Peroorkada. According to the complaint, the well on Hantex-owned land adjoining her property in Balaramapuram had collapsed, causing the compound wall and around 1.5 cents of her land to cave in and fall into the well.In its response to the commission, Hantex said it had written to the district collector on Sept 26, 2023, seeking financial assistance under the disaster management plan to address the dangerous condition of the well. However, no action had been taken, it said.A report submitted by Hantex stated that a meeting of its governing body held on Sept 9, 2024, had decided to submit a proposal to the district panchayat to convert the well into a swimming pool with its assistance. The possibility of using the well for a drinking water project was also considered. However, the Balaramapuram grama panchayat secretary informed the commission that the KWA had found the drinking water project unfeasible. The district panchayat secretary also informed the commission that converting the well into a swimming pool was not possible because the land on which it was situated had not been transferred to the district panchayat. The reports further stated that a meeting convened under the leadership of the district collector had decided that Hantex should take steps to protect the dangerous well by constructing a protective wall. The commission directed Hantex to take the necessary measures to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.
