Ranchi: Doctors at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) removed an approximately 5×5 cm brain tumour from a 42-year-old Dhanbad woman through a one-inch incision on Saturday. The patient, Sonia Khatoon, had neurofibromatosis and oligodendroglioma, a type of brain tumour, and had been undergoing treatment at RIMS for the past month. The surgery was performed by the neurosurgery department after detailed pre-operative assessment and planning.Dr Anand Prakash, head of neurosurgery at RIMS, said the tumour was located in the right frontal region of the brain and had been present for more than a year. Doctors removed it completely.“If left untreated, the tumour could have led to paralysis. Fortunately, it had not reached the blood vessels, which would otherwise have made the case more complicated,” Dr Prakash said. The procedure was considered high-risk because Khatoon also had systemic illness and high blood pressure, raising concerns over anaesthesia and the possibility of heavy blood loss. Before surgery, doctors consulted specialists from other departments and obtained the necessary clearances to minimise risks. The neurosurgery team was led by Dr Prakash and included other department members. The operation required surgical precision because of the tumour’s size, location and the patient’s multiple medical complications.Khatoon is currently on ventilator support and remains under close medical observation. Dr Prakash said the expected recovery period is around 15 to 20 days, subject to her clinical progress.“The successful removal of the tumour highlights the challenges involved in treating complex neurosurgical cases in patients with additional medical conditions. The procedure reflected the importance of surgical precision, clinical expertise and coordination among departments in delivering advanced treatment,” RIMS said in its official statement. The institute said it continues to provide specialised neurosurgical care to patients from Jharkhand and neighbouring areas.
