Gorakhpur: The Gordhoiaya drain project, developed at a cost of Rs 495.24 crore, is set to provide a permanent solution to waterlogging in 17 wards of Gorakhpur. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate the project on Nov 1.The project includes construction of a 9.25-km drain, laying of 17.5 km of sewerlines and setting up of a sewage treatment plant (STP). It comprises 7.75 km of pucca drain, 1.5 km of unpaved drain, a 38 MLD STP, a 61 MLD main pumping station and 14 bridges and culverts. One of the city’s oldest drains, Gordhoiaya had suffered decades of neglect and encroachment. The project will address waterlogging in 17 northern wards, including Shahpur, Chargawan, Shivpur, Ashok Nagar and Ramjanaki Nagar. Sewage from these areas, which earlier flowed directly into the drain, is now being diverted through interceptor sewer lines to the STP. Treated wastewater is discharged into Ramgarh Tal, improving its water quality.Mayor Manglesh Srivastava said the project would help curb waterborne diseases, improve groundwater quality and enhance urban living conditions. The CM will also lay the foundation stone for phase-II, costing Rs 93.72 crore. It includes concretisation of the remaining 1.5-km stretch, a 1.5-km approach road to the STP, 120 streetlights and landscaping. The PWD will construct roads along both sides of the drain at an estimated cost of Rs 68 crore.
