Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema

Chandigarh: Reacting to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) taking cognisance of allegations of unsafe and non-compliant AC sleeper buses used under Punjab govt’s Mukh Mantri Tirath Yatra Yojna, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema accused central agencies of trying to stall the AAP govt’s public initiatives.Replying to a question, Cheema said, “The central agencies are trying to paralyze the AAP govt and its initiatives. The BJP wants to stop the Tirth Yatra scheme. It is on same lines as Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring publicly saying that if his party is voted in, the public welfare schemes like Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna and free bus service will be withdrawn.”NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo said in New Delhi that the commission had received a complaint alleging that the buses used under the pilgrimage scheme did not meet the required safety standards. The complaint raised concerns over unauthorised structural modifications and partitions between the driver’s cabin and passenger compartment.
