Civil groups protest against SIR

Guwahati: Several organisations and civil groups protested in Chachal on Friday against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The protest was organised by People Against SIR, a recently formed civil society group. It alleged that the exercise led to the wrongful deletion of names and the mass disenfranchisement of eligible voters.Assam Nagarik Sanmilan, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and other groups also joined the protest, raising concerns over the revision’s impact on voters and the democratic process.Nirangkush Nath, state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India’s Assam unit, alleged that BJP govt was using repressive measures to suppress opposition to the SIR. He said the movement was gaining momentum nationwide and efforts were underway to build a united platform in Assam under the People Against SIR banner.“We must unite to protect the country’s Constitution and the Tricolour. This country belongs to ordinary people, the working class and the younger generation who seek employment and education,” Nath said.Protesters alleged that 13.5 crore names were deleted from electoral rolls.
