Belagavi: Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has begun regulating vegetable vendors and hawkers around the city market to ease traffic congestion and streamline commercial activity.White boundary lines are being marked, with vendors directed to operate only within designated spaces. Since Saturday, corporation officers and staff have been explaining the arrangements and warning vendors against occupying roads beyond the marked limits. Violators have been cautioned about action. The initiative began at Nargundkar Bhave Chowk after a similar first-phase exercise at Khasbag weekly market. It followed repeated representations by corporator Ravi Salunkhe and demands from residents and traders for designated vending areas and better market management.Residents and traders have complained for years that vendors along Khade Bazaar Road, Ramdev Galli, Shaniwar Khoot and adjoining areas spill onto public roads, causing traffic bottlenecks and inconveniencing pedestrians.Citizens said the initiative’s success would depend on consistent enforcement. Earlier encroachment-clearance drives by the city corporation and traffic police in Ganpat Galli, Khade Bazaar and Maruti Galli had restored order only temporarily, with encroachments returning within days.Residents urged City Corporation to conduct regular monitoring, replace temporary lime markings with permanent lines and install signboards identifying vending zones. They said sustained enforcement would improve traffic movement, pedestrian safety and discipline in the busy market areas.
