Belagavi: A major fire destroyed property estimated at around Rs 1 crore at a store selling furniture, branded clothing and electronic goods on Jatt Road in Athani early Sunday. No casualties were reported. The fire was noticed around 3.30am after smoke began billowing from the premises. Flames quickly engulfed sofas, beds, televisions, refrigerators, clothing and other goods. Locals attempted to douse the flames with water but were unsuccessful. Fire tenders were deployed and made several trips to refill their tanks because of the intensity of the blaze. Firefighters brought the fire under control after nearly two hours. No one was inside the store when the fire broke out. The cause remains undetermined, though a short circuit is suspected. Athani police inspected the scene, and further investigation is under way.
