Margao: Work on Goa’s first hydraulically operated puzzle car park will finally begin in Margao on Monday, bringing some hope to a project that has been stuck for over a decade.Urban development minister Vishwajit Rane will launch the construction work, said PWD minister and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat. The facility is estimated to cost Rs 7.5 crore. It will have space for 70 cars and about 35 two-wheelers.“The project will be maintained by the contractor for five years,” Kamat said. He added that the work is expected to be completed in seven to eight months.“With this, the parking problem of Margao market will be solved,” Kamat said. He also said that if the project works as desired, another such car park will be built in the city. The project has had a long and troubled history. A foundation stone for a multi-level car park was laid in 2015. GST-related complications and administrative delays killed the original RCC multi-level structure, and repeated tender failures followed. The Rs 3 crore allocated in 2011 lay unused for over a decade before it was returned to govt in April 2022.Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) took over the project from Margao Municipal Council in June 2024. It invited bids for the electro-mechanical puzzle parking system in Oct 2025.Rane will also launch the work of renovation of the 104-year-old Margao municipality building and also inaugurate the renovated municipal library on the occasion.
