Woman beaten by husband over fafda-jalebi demand dials helpline

Ahmedabad: Simmering resentment between a Shahibaug couple spilled over when the wife asked the husband to get fafda-jalebis on his way home. The man allegedly came home and beat her for making the demand when he was “carrying most of the family burden, including chores” due to the wife’s arthritis. After the violence, the woman dialled the Abhayam helpline. After intervention from counsellors, the couple apologised to each other. The couple have been married for 20 years and have a 16-year-old son. “The woman has arthritis in the hands, a condition the man knew about before their marriage. He would help with domestic chores and also support her. For the past couple of years, he complained of the unequal burden of work and asked her to chip in,” said a counsellor. “The woman claimed that this often resulted in altercations. She alleged that the man would sometimes beat their son over small issues,” the helpline official added. On Tuesday, the woman called up the husband, asking him to get fafda-jalebis. “The woman claimed he lost his temper and came home and beat her up. He allegedly told her that she does nothing while he is expected to serve her delicacies. Offended, she called up the helpline,” the counsellor said. After being counselled, the couple said they would improve their ties and understand each other’s hardships.
