Cutbona boat owners flag unhygienic conditions at jetty

Margao: The Cutbona Boat Owners Federation has urged the directorate of fisheries to take urgent steps to improve sanitation and maintenance at the Cutbona fishing jetty, citing stagnant water, rotting fish and poor upkeep. The demand was made in a written representation submitted to the fisheries department office at the jetty after a meeting of boat owners on Wednesday. The federation drew the department’s attention to the unhygienic surroundings, improper traffic management, absence of clearly demarcated parking slots, and the occupation of valuable space by idle vessels. It sought immediate corrective measures.Federation secretary Patrick D’Silva said the problems called for timely intervention to ensure the smooth functioning of the jetty and to protect the interests of the fishing community.D’Silva also pointed out that a fishing boat, which capsized and sank near the jetty around four months ago, has still not been removed despite the issue being brought to the notice of authorities. He said the vessel posed a serious safety hazard to boats entering and leaving the new jetty and stressed that it needed to be removed without delay. The federation also expressed concern that earlier complaints had not been acted upon and said authorities had failed to make progress on issues raised on previous occasions.
