A routine shopping trip for her children’s clothes turned into unexpected news for Bimla Devi, a woman from Kotkapura in Punjab’s Faridkot district. She spent just Rs 7 on a lottery ticket while shopping and won a prize of Rs 1 crore in a Sikkim government lottery. Her husband works as a daily-wage labourer, and the family hopes the money will help improve their financial situation and provide better opportunities for their children. As reported by Punjab Newsline, Devi bought the ticket from the Star Lottery Stall near the railway station on Railway Road. She purchased it a day before the results were announced, without expecting the small purchase to bring such a large prize.

How she found out about the win

In a conversation with NDTV, Devi explained that she had gone out to buy clothes when she decided to purchase a lottery ticket. “I had come to buy some clothes. I felt like buying a lottery ticket. I bought it and kept it at home. I called the lottery man and he told me that I have won the lottery,” she said. Asked how much she had paid for the ticket, she replied, “7 rupees.” When asked whether she was happy, she answered, “I am very happy.” As reported by several local websites and news channels, the lottery results were announced the following evening. Lottery stall owner Naresh Monga informed the family about the winning ticket. The family then went to the stall, where Monga congratulated them and offered them sweets. Relatives, neighbours and other local residents also joined in the celebrations, with family members dancing bhangra.

What she plans to do with the money

For Devi, the prize represents an opportunity to improve her family’s financial circumstances. She was asked what she intended to do after winning the money. “I have a lot of money. I will get a job. I will get a job for my son,” she said. She also spoke about her family and her hopes for the future. Asked how her family was doing, she replied, “My family is fine.” “God has heard my prayers. I will make a good life,” she said. When asked again what she planned to do with the prize money, she added, “I haven’t thought about it yet. The family has not finalised how it will use the winnings. As reported by several local websites and news channels, they plan to discuss the decision together and are considering starting a small business for their children to help strengthen their financial position.

A first Rs 1 crore win for the lottery stall

The win was also a significant moment for the shop that sold the ticket. According to NDTV, Monga said he had been running the lottery business for around six months and had previously sold tickets that won prizes worth lakhs of rupees. However, this was the first time a customer had won the Rs 1 crore prize through his stall since it moved near the railway station. The news brought celebrations to the family and the surrounding neighbourhood. For Devi, the immediate priority is finding a way to use the money to improve life for her family, particularly her children.
