Jail initiative keeps children of inmates on path to education
For many inmates at Vadodara Central Jail, their biggest concern is not their own future, but that of their children

Vadodara: For many inmates at Vadodara Central Jail, their biggest concern is not their own future, but that of their children. With the family’s primary breadwinner behind bars, dwindling household incomes often force children from economically disadvantaged families to drop out of school and put their dreams on hold.In an effort to break this cycle, Vadodara Central Jail, in collaboration with the Rise India Initiative, has launched a programme to ensure that a parent’s incarceration does not deprive a child of education and better opportunities in life.“We provide free coaching, school uniforms, books and other educational support to the children of jail inmates. The aim is to ensure they receive quality education and get an opportunity to improve their lives,” said Nidhi Brahmbhatt of the Rise India Initiative. The idea for the initiative emerged after Brahmbhatt counselled a child in a central Gujarat city who had attempted suicide. During the interaction, she learnt that the child was being ridiculed by fellow students and even teachers because his father was in jail.“That incident made me realise the need for an initiative to support such children. I approached Vadodara Central Jail superintendent Usha Rada, who was very supportive and helped us establish the project,” said Brahmbhatt, who is also a member of the Vadodara Central Jail Welfare and Rehabilitation Committee.Under the programme, authorities identified around 82 children of jail inmates who needed educational assistance. While some had dropped out of school, others were struggling academically. The initiative also covers school fees for children from families unable to afford them, in addition to providing learning materials, uniforms and coaching.“Once these children complete their education, they will have better chances of securing jobs and supporting their families,” Brahmbhatt added.By helping children stay in school despite their parents’ incarceration, the initiative seeks to give them a chance to build a better future, free from the financial hardships and social stigma they often face.
