Mumbai: Central Railway on Sunday commissioned the 13.53km Khardi-Kasara third line, a key section of the Kalyan-Kasara third line project. The commissioner of railway safety (CRS) inspected the line on Oct 17 and 18, following which it was cleared for train operations at 100kmph. A speed trial was successfully conducted at 117kmph, and the CRS appreciated the quality of construction, track work and safety arrangements. The commissioning followed a 12-hour traffic block on the intervening night of Oct 17 and 18, during which major track connections were completed and the Kasara yard remodelled. The project involved laying an electrified line through hilly terrain, strengthening and extending bridges, extensive earthwork, and upgrading signalling, electrification and the Khardi and Kasara yards. The third line is expected to ease congestion, improve punctuality and increase capacity for passenger and freight trains on the Mumbai-Kasara corridor once the entire project is completed.
