Animal sacrifice banned during yatra at Kakkeri

Belagavi: DC Mohammad Roshan has prohibited animal sacrifice during the annual Shri Bhistadevi Yatra at Kakkeri village in Khanapur taluk, scheduled from Oct 19 to 21. Animal sacrifice was once widely practised on the temple premises during the festival. It has been prohibited in recent years. The order followed a representation by Shri Dayanand Swami, president of World Animal Welfare Board, who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice during the annual pilgrimage. Acting on his memorandum, the district administration banned the sacrifice of animals within the temple premises and across Kakkeri during the festival. To maintain law and order, the administration has also declared the area a dry zone from 6am on Oct 19 to 6am on Oct 20. Accordingly, bars, wine shops and other liquor outlets in the vicinity will remain closed during this period. Officials warned that strict action would be taken against anyone violating the prohibition orders issued under the Karnataka Excise Act.
